I was reading the RSPB's !Anthology of Wildlife Poetry" yesterday It has a forword by Andrew Motion and hispoem," As the Osprey to the Fish" It recounts his familt's visit to Loch Garten in 1959when he was 7 when his father had said "we'll see the only osprey in Britain" Unfortunately thay saw ziltch, And then "here in today" he and whoever he is with unexpectedly encounter a fishing osprey in the Lake District,
"......................next minute the osprey slides in
high and silent above our high heads,
and neither of us finds a word to say;,
the devastating cold beak is enough.

My own silence holds even when the wings,
with their mud fringe and chalky central panel,
labour hard enough for the downdraught to brush
the heart inside my body, Then I am lifted up
in the metal talons and ferried back to make
that sighting I missed with my father, although
no daylight remains as we leave the bare fell."
the sleekbreast, the impassive golden eye

I have been following with interest the sad story in New Jersey.  An adult osprey was killed on the road near a nest with 3 chicks.  The chicks were rescued and fed and have now been placed in other nests around the area, hopefully all will go well with their new foster families, fingers crossed.

If interested you can see all on their FB page Here

Thanks for posting the link Starling. Such an amazing story and it always warms the cockles of my heart to see how much effort folk put in to save ospreys when disaster strikes. I hope all 3 re-homed chicks fare well.

I hope all 3 chicks do well Starling.   I think they did that at Rutland one year, put a chick in another nest, it was a while ago so cannot remember the details.

Yes Mary I have a vague recollection of that as well, but like you cannot remember the details.
